What is Twitter hashtag analytics?

Twitter hashtag analytics is a report on how posts that use a hashtag are doing on X (Twitter): how many views they get, how often people like, reply or repost, which posts stand out and who wrote them. It helps you decide whether a hashtag is worth using and what kind of post works under it.

This tool builds that report from this week's top posts for any hashtag, cashtag or keyword. It's a sample, up to 20 posts, so read it as a picture of what does well, not a count of every post.

How do I track a hashtag on Twitter?

On X, search the hashtag and switch between the Top and Latest tabs to see popular and recent posts. That shows the posts but not the numbers behind them. For a quick summary, run the hashtag through the tool above: it reads this week's top posts and adds up their views and engagement for you.

To follow a hashtag over time, run a report on the same day each week and note the views per post and engagement. If both rise, the topic is getting more attention.

What does the report show?

Every number comes from the public counts on the posts in the sample.

SectionWhat it tells youHow we work it out
Views per postHow far a typical top post with this tag traveled.Total views of the sample ÷ number of posts.
EngagementHow many people who saw a post acted on it.(Likes + replies + reposts + bookmarks) ÷ views × 100.

Who got the most engagementThe accounts whose posts drew the most response.Engagements added up per account, top five.

How many hashtags should I use on X?

One or two. X's help center recommends no more than 2 hashtags per post as a best practice, though you can use more. Pick tags people actually search for, and keep spaces and punctuation out of them, because either one breaks the hashtag.

Do hashtags still help on X?

They help people find you. A hashtag on a public post makes it show up when someone searches or taps that tag. It won't make a weak post spread, though. People share a post for what it says. The hashtag only puts it in front of people already looking for the topic.

  • Run a report before you use a tag, and read the top posts. If they're nothing like yours, pick another tag.
  • Check "Used alongside it" for smaller, more specific tags in the same topic.
  • Look at who got the most engagement. Those are the accounts worth replying to.

Postel does this kind of research every week: it finds posts doing unusually well in your niche, learns how you write and drafts your own posts for LinkedIn and X. You can also check any account's engagement rate or search X by words, dates and likes.
