Getting Your API Key

1. Go to Settings > API Keys in your organization settings (requires admin access)
2. Click Create API Key and enter a name
3. Copy the key immediately - it's only shown once
4. Keys have a pstl_ prefix (e.g., pstl_abc123...)

The creation dialog also shows ready-to-copy MCP config snippets for different clients.

Alternatively, running the OAuth setup command below will open your browser and guide you through the authentication flow.

General

Our MCP server supports Streamable HTTP transport with OAuth 2.1 and API key authentication:

Claude (web and desktop)

Open Postel in Claude's connector directory, click Connect to Claude and sign in to Postel. You can also add it by hand: open Customize > Connectors, click +, choose Add custom connector and enter https://www.postel.app/api/mcp.

Claude Code

With OAuth (recommended):

Then run /mcp once you've opened a Claude Code session to go through the browser-based OAuth flow.

With API Key:

• --scope user - Available in all your projects

• Default (no flag) - Current project only

To add the MCP to Cursor:

1. Open File > Preferences > Cursor Settings > MCP
2. Or press Cmd+Shift+P (Mac) / Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) and type "View: Open MCP Settings"

Activate the server using MCP: List Servers, selecting Postel, and selecting Start Server.

Note: Windsurf uses mcp-remote to connect to HTTP MCP servers. The API key is passed via environment variable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI assistants support the Postel MCP server?

Any client that supports remote MCP servers: Claude on the web and desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Zed and others. Claude users can add Postel from Claude's connector directory.

Do I need a paid Postel plan to use the MCP server?

You can connect on any plan and read, create and edit drafts. Scheduling and publishing need a plan that includes scheduling, which every paid plan and the 7-day trial do. generate-post and refine-post use 1 AI credit each from your plan.

Is my data secure when using the MCP server?

The MCP server uses the same checks as the Postel web app: encrypted connections, authorization on every request, and rate limits. API keys are stored hashed, and the full key is only shown once, when you create it.

Can I use the MCP server with multiple organizations?

Yes. API keys belong to one organization, so create a key in each organization you want to use. OAuth connects to your most recent organization.

What happens if I run out of AI credits?

generate-post and refine-post switch to Lite mode, with a daily cap, until your credits renew or you top up. Every other tool keeps working. Use get-usage to check where you stand.
