What does opp mean?
Opp is slang for opposition or opponent. On social media it means a rival, a hater or anyone you see as against you.
What is an opp?
An opp is someone who is against you: an enemy, a rival or a critic. The plural is opps. People use it seriously about real conflicts, and jokingly about small ones, like a sibling who ate the last slice.
You'll see it on TikTok, X and Instagram in captions, comments and videos. The tone depends on the person and the context.
Where opp comes from
Opp comes from hip-hop, and from Chicago drill music in the early 2010s in particular. Drill rappers used it for rival crews, and the word carried real weight.
It spread through songs, viral clips and TikTok sounds. Today many people use it casually or as a joke, often without knowing its roots.
How opp is used online
- Story times: creators telling stories about drama with their opps.
- Skits: jokes about rival sports teams, fandoms or coworkers.
- Comments and captions: quick jabs at people someone disagrees with.
A few typical examples:
- "My opps really thought they could outdo me."
- "When you see your opp at the grocery store."
- "Not my opp trying to copy my style."
Opps or OPs?
Don't mix up opps with OPs. Opps are rivals or enemies. OP means original poster: the person who started a thread or a discussion, as on Reddit or X.
O.P.P. the song
Naughty by Nature's 1991 hit "O.P.P." used the letters for something else: "other people's property", meaning someone else's partner. It has nothing to do with today's opp.
